House rules

Spades rules vary between groups. The sheet uses the common scoring by default. Under "Players and rules" you can change:

  • Nil tricks count for the team: tricks taken by a failed nil bidder help the partner make their bid. By default they only count as bags.
  • Blind nil: nil without looking at your cards, worth ±200.
  • Lose at −200: a team that drops to −200 loses.
  • Target score: for example 300 for shorter games.

FAQ

Who plays with whom?

Four players in two fixed partnerships, partners sitting opposite. On the sheet, players 1 and 3 form one team and players 2 and 4 the other. Change the names under "Players and rules".

How is a hand scored?

Partners add their bids together. If the team takes at least that many tricks, it scores 10 points per trick bid plus 1 point for each extra trick. If it falls short, it loses 10 points per trick bid.

What is nil?

A player who bids nil aims to take no tricks at all. Success scores 100 points, failure costs 100. The partner's bid is scored separately.

What are bags?

Overtricks, the tricks taken beyond the bid. Each is worth 1 point, but every 10 bags collected cost 100 points. The sheet shows the bag count under each team.

When does the game end?

After the hand in which a team reaches 500 points and leads. On a tie, play continues. The target score and a loss at −200 can be set.

Is my game saved?
